Hidden in Plain Sight – A Suffolk Response is an event which is taking place at the APEX in Bury St Edmunds on Friday 30 March 2012, starting at 9am and finishing at 1pm.
'Hidden in plain sight' was the final report of the Equality and Human Rights Commissions (EHRC) inquiry into disability – related harassment. The report uncovered that harassment is a commonplace experience for disabled people, but a culture of disbelief and systemic institutional failures are preventing it from being tackled effectively. It has been months since the report was published, which included recommendations and shone a light on some of the worst fatal disability hate crime incidents to occur in the UK to date.
We, the Suffolk Hate Crime Consortium in partnership with St Edmundsbury District Council and the Suffolk Hate Crime Service are delivering this event to raise awareness of the findings of the report and to examine how we can implement changes in Suffolk to combat disability hate crime and provide adequate support to victims. At the event we will hear directly from the EHRC and other speakers about Disability Hate Crime in Suffolk, these will include personal perspectives and plans on the implementation of the report’s recommendations to improve services. Critically though will be the facilitated table discussions to agree a set of actions for all agencies to start to work in partnership.
This event is aimed at groups representing and representatives of people with disabilities, Councillors, Chief Executives, Directors and policy makers across the voluntary, statutory and public sector.
The event will start with a coffee registration from 9am for a 9.30am start. We will then hear from guest speakers, after which we will break out into round table discussions. The discussions will focus on the 7 core recommendations and the targeted recommendations as outlined in the report. Finally, attendees will have an opportunity to pledge to do one thing to tackle disability related harassment. The event will finish no later than 1pm with a lunch buffet in the APEX bar area. A detailed agenda will be provided nearer the time.
Please register your place by contacting Joanna Bennett at Joanna.bennett@iscre.org as places are limited. Please also indicate whether you will be travelling by car and whether disability parking is required, so that we can make necessary arrangements. Parking will be free.
