Volunteer case study: Chantry Grasshoppers

A new volunteer at Chantry Grasshoppers!

Stephen was already involved with local football as a volunteer with the Ipswich Town Community Trust ‘Football in the Community’ Programme but he was keen to volunteer with a local club. Chantry Grasshoppers Youth FC, an Ipswich club, were looking to extend their provision within the local community as part of their development as an FA Charter Standard Club, and had attended a Workshop on Volunteering in May 2011 organised by the Suffolk FA, Volunteer Centres Suffolk and the Suffolk 2012 Volunteering Project.

So there we have it, a club looking to expand, a volunteer looking to get involved and some local support to help the process along! Stephen is now coaching a Girl’s Under 10 football session, for the club, on a Thursday evening at the Chantry Sport Centre in Ipswich, as well as helping out on match days on a Sunday. He does this as a volunteer and enjoys the chance to help the young players improve their skills and achieve their goals.

“I completed the FA Level One Coaching Course with Ipswich Town Community Trust and they organised all the necessary CRB checks before I could start to coach.” The challenge at Chantry Grasshoppers is to get young girls enthused by the game, help them to have fun and to improve. The response from the girls has been great - they keep coming back each week for more! The parents have been very positive as well, I am now trying to encourage some of them to get more involved in helping me to develop the sessions.”

Nick Ward from Chantry Grasshoppers said, “We have found the Volunteer Centre extremely helpful in securing the services of new volunteers. One simple form can enable our club to secure new blood for the club and we thank the Volunteer Centre team in Ipswich for their help.”
