Representation

ICVS is passionate about representation. There may not be much in the way of immediate reward, but it is a crucial element of being a membership organisation and just as important as helping groups provide public services. Our members should be involved and engaged,

• As builders of social capital for people and between communities
• As advocates for unmet need and those that go unheard
• As influencers based on their local and specialist expertise
• Where appropriate as service providers

As a “standard” ICVS will prioritise the time and commitment invested to the areas that benefit the sector strategically and especially where we can achieve the most influence towards a leading role for our members. In July 2009 we contacted 120 of our members to find out more about what they wanted from ICVS including asking them if ICVS could help present their organisations views to the local authority and other public agencies. The majority said that they felt they would like training or advice to help them with representation. We aim to help our members become empowered in local decision making and partnership working.

ICVS prioritises achieving influence in One Ipswich, the Local Strategic Partnership and we work closely with Ipswich Borough Council to ensure the VCS has a voice.

Our remit for representation stems not only from our members, but also through the day-to-day work we do with the voluntary and community sector of Ipswich. We listen to the concerns, issues and priorities that affect the VCS and aim to give them a voice as a collective at a strategic level.
